Manifest Destiny

John O’Sullivan on “Manifest Destiny” 1839 The American people have come from many other nations, and the Declaration of National Independence is entirely based on the great principle of human equality. These facts demonstrate our unique position, different from any other nation. We have, in reality, little connection with the history of any of those nations – their glories or their crimes. On the contrary, our national birth was the beginning of a new history and the formation and progress of an untried political system, which separates us from the past and connects us with the future only. In regards to the entire development of man’s natural rights (in moral, political, and national life) we may confidently assume that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity . It is so destined, because the principle upon which a nation is organized decides its destiny, and our principle of equality is perfect, is universal. It rules all the operations of the physical world, and it is also the conscious law of the soul -- the obvious order of morality, which truly defines the duty of man to his fellow man, and consequently man's rights as man. Besides, the truthful history of any nation provides abundant evidence that its happiness, its greatness, and its duration, were always proportionate to the democratic equality of its system of government. . . . What friend of human liberty, civilization, and refinement, can look upon the history of the monarchies and aristocracies of antiquity, and not regret that they ever existed? What philanthropist can reflect on the oppressions, the cruelties, and injustices committed by those other societies on the masses of mankind, and not turn with moral horror from the memory? America is destined for better deeds. It is our unparalleled glory that we have no memories of battle fields, except in defense of humanity, of the oppressed, of the rights of conscience, and the rights of personal enfranchisement . Our history describes no scenes of horrid violence, where hundreds of thousands of men were led to slay one another, no victims tricked by emperors, kings, and nobles, no demons in the human form called heroes. We have had patriots to defend our homes and our liberties, but no people who aspire to crowns or thrones; nor have the American people ever allowed themselves to be led by wicked ambition to depopulate the land, to spread despair far and wide. We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, except only as lessons to avoid. The expansive future is our arena, where our history will grow. We are entering on its untouched space, with the truths of God in our minds, generosity in our hearts, and with a clear conscience untouched by the past. We are the nation of human progress, and who will – what can? – set limits on our onward march? Providence is with us, and no earthly power can stop us. The far-reaching, boundless future will be the era of American greatness. In its magnificent domain of space and time, the nation of many nations is destined to manifest to mankind the excellence of divine principles; to establish on earth the noblest temple ever dedicated to the worship of Almighty God -- the Sacred and the True. Our nation’s floor shall be the Western hemisphere -- its roof the firmament of the star-studded heavens, and its congregation a Union of many Republics, made up of hundreds of happy millions who call no man master, but are governed by God's natural and moral law of equality, the law of brotherhood -- of "peace and good will amongst men.". . . Yes, we are the nation of progress, of individual freedom, of universal enfranchisement. Equality of rights is the guiding principle of our union. We must move forward to fulfill our mission of spreading freedom of conscience, freedom of person, freedom of trade and business pursuits, and the universality of freedom and equality. This is our high destiny, and we must accomplish it. All this will be our future history: to establish on earth the moral dignity and salvation of man, which comes only in the belief of the absolute truth and charity of God. America has been chosen for this blessed mission to the nations of the world, which are shut out from the life-giving light of truth; and our high example shall seek to destroy the oppression of kings, hierarchs, and oligarchs and will carry the glad tidings of peace and good-will to millions who now live barely better than animals. Who, then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity?

O'Sullivan's Argument:America is the best and most pure nation in the world and it is our mission to spread freedom, democracy, and christianity to the world. Evidence: - America has democracy to defend the rights of men.- America has a blank history and therefore, an open future.- America has God on its side.

Manifest Destiny

LyricsFour hundred years or moreSince you came to crucifyThey were taken far from homeThere were promises of paradiseBut if they had been told that dayThey would be told that this wayTo satisfy the souls of chosen menSee I had to look carefullyAt the same of my ancestryTo re-define the story line again. If I was taken for a dayAnd shown another dayEvery child can learn a different thingSee I tried a million timesBut I had to change my mindSadness was the best thing I could bringOn the inside he was dead and this is what he saidAs he took away the bloom above the cloudsSuperiority was clearly meant to beSo destiny will manifest in time.So where has the love all goneA troubled trail of tears will tell the takeOf how I was put down where I don't belongWoman, Child and man for saleFor ethical slavery is just an absurdityNow can you be alive when you are deadWith these chains of hypocrisyThe same of my ancestryForever stained by blood in wich you tread.

"Manifest Destiny" by JamiroquaiDiscusses Manifest Destiny as a justification for slavery.

Princeton University says Manifest Destiny was a policy of imperialism rationalized as inevitable (as if granted by God).

History Alive! says:"Manifest Destiny was the 19th century belief that it was America’s right and duty to spread across the North American continent."

From sea to shining sea!

It is America's “manifest destiny to overspread the continent.”
