Manganese

Atomic Number: 25Atomic Mass: 54.9Number of Protons/Electrons: 25Number of Neutrons: 30

ManganeseSymbol: Mn

HISTORYProposed to be an element by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1774, manganese was discovered by Johan Gottlieb Gahn, a Swedish chemist, by heating the mineral pyrolusite (MnO2) in the presence of charcoal later that year.

Uses for Manganese-Drinks cans are made of an alloy of aluminium with 1.5% manganese-Manganese dioxide (MnO2), the most common compound of manganese, makes up about 0.14% of the Earth's crust -It is used in dry cell batteries to prevent the formation of hydrogen

Manganese Facts-Johann Gottlieb Gahn was the first scientist to isolate manganese from pyrolusite in 1774.-Manganese resembles iron, but with a silver gray color.-During World War II, manganese replaced most of the nickel in US coins, as nickel became scarce.-It has also been used for glassmaking, pigments, and production of stainless steel.-It rusts in a matter very similar to iron in water.

Manganese Compounds Manganese Dioxide (MnO): 1. This is used for dry-cell batteries, such as the alkaline battery and the zinc-carbon battery.2.Its also used for pigment and as a precursor to other manganese compounds, such as KMnO4. Manganese(II) Fluoride:1. Used to make special kinds of glass2. Used to help make special lasers
