Macbeth

Today's Topic:Validity of Holinshed's Chonicles as a Historical Record

Why Holinshed's Chronicles are Invalid

-Stories are embellished in order to glorify English history -Make no distinction between real events and myths

Geoffrey of Monmouth -own sources were oral tradition and earlier manuscrips with a similar basis.Hector Boece-history described as quasi-legendary and unreliable

Holinshed's UnreliableSources

Only used as a source of inspiration and to provide a few quasi-historical details.

-Duncan was an incompetent ruler- Macbeth was a generous ruler, especially to the church- Macbeth's rule was prosperous and peaceful

Inaccuracies in Holinshed's Chronicles:

Queen Elizabeth I found chronicles to be offensive

In general, historical writing was not academically rigorous enough

Sections are written by other hands such as William Harrison.

Contrasting choices of style and source material because of many authors and revisers
