Macbeth final project

Ambition is a big theme in Macbeth. It is what leads him to do all of the bad things he does. Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something. This is why Macbeth changed so much from the beginning of the play. At the beginning, he was a honored soldier, but his ambition lead him to become a horrible tyrant by the end of the play. His ambition had taken over.

"Stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires" (Shakespeare 1.4.52-53).

Ambition

Violence

"The castle I will surprise, seize upon Fife, give to th' edge o' th' sword his wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trae him in his line" (Shakespeare 4.1.157-60).

Violence is a theme in Macbeth because it is what the whole play is based on. Most characters in the play are important because of the honors they received from fighting. Macbeth was honored at the beginning of the play because he is a soldier. He does what he wants in order to get what he wants. In order to get what he wants, he uses violence. In the play, Macbeth and his murderers had killed Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff's family.

Lady Macbeth Lena Headey

"Come, you spirits that tend on moral thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty" (Shakespeare 1.5.30-33

Lady Macbeth is a very bold female character in the play. She pushes Macbeth to commit murder. She wishes she was not a woman so that she could do it herself. Towards the end of the play, Lady Macbeth becomes mad. She does things in her sleep and imagines blood still on her hands because she is guilty of pushing Macbeth to murder these people.

Lena Headey acts as Cersei Lannister in the popular show Game of Thrones. She is 46 years old and plays a queen.

Craig Parker is a 49 year old actor who plays the role of Stéphane Narcisse in the show Reign. In this show he plays a French politician.

At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is known as an honored soldier, but by the end he is a horrible tyrant. He believed what the three witches had told him and was very confident in himself. He murdered people who got in the way of his plan, He is a very selfish character. His wife pushed him to do one bad thing, but Macbeth is responsible for his own downfall.

“For mine own good, / all causes shall give way” (Shakespeare 3.4. 141-142).

MacduffViggo Mortensen

Viggo Mortensen plays the role of Aragorn in the show Lord of The Rings. He plays the "Ranger of the North".

Macduff is a character in the play who does not trust Macbeth from the beginning. He does not think Macbeth deserves to be king. He refuses to be loyal to him. Macduff fled to England to get help from the king to get rid of Macbeth. Macbeth kills his family, and Macduff knows it was him. He wants revenge. At the end of the play, Macduff defeats the horrible tyrant, Macbeth.

"And let the angel whom thou still hast served tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb untimely ripped" (Shakespeare 5.8.12-13).

The setting of Macbeth is during the 11th century in Scotland. It is often dark and dreary here since it is towards the north. The witches had contributed to the setting by making the mood of the play right away.

"Fair is foul, and foul is fair hover through the fog and filthy air" (Shakespeare 1.1.12-13).

Setting

SymbolBlood

Blood is mentioned many times in Macbeth. It is a symbolizes guilt, murder and violence. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are very guilty of murdering many people. Ghosts haunt Macbeth because of of his guilt.

"It will have blood, they say. Blood will have blood" (Shakespeare 3.4.128).

Macbeth

Hallucination is one of the motifs that is mentioned in Macbeth many times. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth suffer from this due to the guilt they feel. The number of hallucinations increase as they have more guilt. The characters slowly become crazy because of this.

"If I stand here, I saw him" (Shakespeare 3.4.76).

Song

The song I'll make a man out of you by Donny Osmond in the movie Mulan can connect to this play in many ways. The song states "You're a spineless, pale, pathetic lot and you haven't got a clue somehow I'll make a man out of you".This shows how Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth into killing others. She also tells Macbeth "wouldst thou have that which esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting "I dare not" wait upon "I do""(Shakespeare 1.7.41-44). She calls him a coward until he no longer wants to be called names and gets what he wants.

Scene Clip

In scene seven of act one, Macbeth starts to second guess himself about killing the king. He thinks that “Duncan hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels” (Shakespeare 1.7.16-19). Macbeth thinks Duncan is a great king and leader. Macbeth tells his wife that he no longer wants to go along with the plan. Lady Macbeth is ashamed of her husband. She says, “When you durst do it, then you were a man” (Shakespeare 1.7.49). Macbeth is scared that the plan will fail. Lady Macbeth tells him her plan. They will get the king's servants drunk, kill the king, and blame the servants. Macbeth then changes his mind again and agrees with his wife. He says, “I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat”(Shakespeare 1.7.79-80). They are going to go through with Lady Macbeth’s plan to kill King Duncan.

In act three scene four, while Macbeth is having a banquet, the three murderers go to him and tell them what they have done. The first murderer tells him that Fleance had escaped. The murderers had killed Banquo, but not his son. Now Macbeth says “then comes my fit again” (Shakespeare 3.4.22). He is scared that Banquo’s son is going to tell someone what happened and they will find out it was him. While Lady Macbeth reminds him that he is no entertaining the guests, he complains about Banquo not showing up even though he knows he is dead. He starts imagining the ghost of Banquo is there. Lady Macbeth tries to make the guests feel better by constantly saying things like, “my lord is often thus and hath been from his youth” (56-57). She tries to calm him down by telling him it is a hallucination, but he does not believe her. The ghost does not go away for Macbeth and he says “this is more strange than such a murder is” (Shakespeare 3.4.85-86). He had ruined the banquet and Lady Macbeth was very embarrassed for him. Macbeth only claims that “my strange self-abuse is the initiate fear that wants hard use” (Shakespeare 3.4.148-149). He explains how he is just a beginner at murder and the thoughts will go away when he is more experienced.

Modern day connection

The play Macbeth is just like the modern show Breaking Bad. Breaking bad is about a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. It is just like Macbeth because in the beginning, Walter White (chemistry teacher) is very loved by the students, while Macbeth is a honored soldier at the beginning of the play. The witches tell Macbeth "show his eyes and grieve his heart" (Shakespeare 4.1.115). They give him bad news, just like Walter learns that he has cancer. Both of the characters had a bad influence. For Macbeth, it was his wife, and for Walter, it was Skyler White. Both people were murderers and killed innocent people. They started only caring about themselves. Walter starts to overthink everything and go crazy just like Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost. Macbeth and Breaking bad are very alike but one is modern and the other is not.
