Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908 near central Texas in the community of Johnson City. He was born on a farm and was the oldest of five siblings. To pay for college, Johnson worked at a variety of weird jobs. Growing up, Johnson wanted to be a teacher, so he went to Southwest Texas State Teacher College. Before going into government, Lyndon was a 5th, 6th, and 7th grade teacher. He was also a principal for a while. Johnson served six terms in the white house as a senator and was the youngest minority leader. Lyndon B. Johnson also signed the Civil Rights Bill on July 2, 1964. When Lyndon B. Johnson decided to run for office, he was running against John F. Kennedy for presidency. When he lost the election, he became Kennedy's vice president. After John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Johnson became a democratic president for the US. Lyndon wanted to make America a "Great Society," and to do that, Johnson added Health Care and Medicare for elders and everyone else. Johnson also improved education and civil rights. When doing this, Johnson neglected to raise taxes so federal spending increased dramatically which also led to high inflation of prices. Another thing Johnson is remembered for is the Vietnam War. Johnson spent more money sending more American troops out to Vietnam, and instead of trying to stop the war, Johnson shot air strike targets to the north. Johnson didn't run for a second term. Instead, he retired in January 20, 1969.On January 22, 1973, Johnson died of a heart attack in San Antonio, Texas.
