Have you ever looked up at the stars and realized that the Moon looks a little diferent than it did before? Don't worry! The moon isnt actually changing shape, its just going through different phases. "Phase" means a certain part of a cycle. In this case, the Moon is going through the lunar cycle.

Why Does the Moon Seem to Change Shape?
Did you know that the moon doesn't give off it's own light? It is actually is just reflecting the light of the Sun and shining some of that sunlight back to Earth. However, most of the time, some of the Moon's surface is darkened by a shadow cast by the Earth. You can tell what phase the Moon is in by looking at what shape the shadow is making on the Moon. The Moon goes through these phases: New Moon, Young, Waxing Crescent, Waxing Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Waning Gibbous, Waning Quarter, Waning Crescent, and Old. If you want to know what phase is tonight, just look at the chart to the left!
