Beethoven inherited his musical talent from his grandfather, Louis van Beethoven. Beethoven's father, Johann, was also employed there as a musician but had limited talent and a very aggressive personality. Johann drank excessively, but he did, however, realise Ludwig's potential, but was disappointed when his son, did not become a child prodigy like Mozart.
Beethoven was the assistant (and formal student) of Christian Gottlob Neefe. As a teen, he performed more than he composed. In 1787, Neefe sent him to Vienna for reasons unknown, but many agree that he met and briefly studied with Mozart.
