Los Angeles is the largest city in California and the second-largest urban area in the nation. It is located in the southern part of the state on the Pacific Ocean. It is the seat of Los Angeles County. Geographically, it extends more than 40 miles from the mountains to the sea.

Officially the City of Los Angeles but known commonly by L.A., is California's most populous city and the second-most populous city in the country after New York City. With just 469 square miles (1,215 square kilometers), Los Angeles had an official population at the 2010 census of 3,792,621.An official population estimate in 2013 of Los Angeles shows it now has a population of 3,862,839, which means it grew by nearly 37,000 people during 2012.
