Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies:Chaos vs. Order

"The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. " (167)

"Ralph counted. 'I'm chief then.' The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of mortification. He started up, then changed his mind and sat back down again while the air rang. Ralph looked at him, eager to offer something." (Golding, 19-20)

"He looked in astonishment, no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger. He spilt the water and leapt to his feet, laughing excitedly. Beside the pool his sinewy body held up a mask that drew their eyes and appalled them. He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling." (58)

"The sow gave a gasping squeal and staggered up, with the two spears sticking in her fat flank. The boys shouted and rushed forward, and the piglets scattered and the sow burst the advancing line and went crashing away through the forest. " (124)

During the beginning of the novel, the boys on the island demostrated order. Ralph, who represents common sense, focused on creating rules and jobs for the boys. However, when Jack was introduced to hunting, he became obsessed with the idea of killing a pig. Slowly the boys began acting more like savages.

After the boys brutally murder the sow, it is obvious that chaos has overpowered order on the island. Piggy's death, along with the destruction of the conch, is a symbol for the overall ending of order among the boys. After that, everything quickly spirals downward until they are rescued and realize what savages they have become.
