Looking for Alaska

Looking for Alaskaby John Green

Summary 3The day after the prank, Miles and his friends played a drinking game where everyone shares their best and worst days. Alaska told them that her worst day was when her mom died in front of her when she was a child. Shortly after, at the beginning of the new semester, Miles, Alaska, and the Colonel got drunk to celebrate the success of their prank. Alaska and Miles ended up kissing and then Alaska fell asleep. She woke up hours later to talk on the phone and to doodle white flowers, but then all of a sudden she became angry and started screaming that she forgot something. She drove off of the campus with white flowers, drunk and upset.

Summary 1In the beginning of the book, Miles Halter arrived at Culver Creek, a school in Alabama. He meets his roommate, Chip Martin, but his nickname is the Colonel. The Colonel gave Miles the nickname Pudge. The Colonel introduces Miles to a girl named Alaska. Miles became interested in her from the first moment he saw her. They both informed him the main rule at Culver Creek is to never snitch. On one of the first nights at Culver Creek, Miles got kidnapped by a group of kids called the Weekend Warriors. They tied him up and threw him in the lake. Miles's new friends made it their goal to get revenge.

Summary 2Miles, Alaska, the Colonel, and their other friend Takumi got caught smoking by the Eagle, the owner of Culver Creek. Alaska and the Colonel took the blame to earn trust and to show that sometimes you have to make sacrafices for your friends. When Thanksgiving came along Alaska and Miles stay at Culver Creek while everyone else went home for the weekend. They pulled pranks on the Weekend Warriors and planned other larger pranks to do later in the book. After Christmas break, Miles and his friends distracted the Eagle so that they could prank the Weekend Warriors once again.

"So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the buttom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane" (John Green).

"And then something invisible snapped inside her, and that which had come together commenced to fall apart" (John Green).

"Thomas Edison's last words were "It's very beautiful over there". I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful" (John Green).

Summary 4The next morning the Eagle called everyone to an assembly. He informed the students that Alaska crashed into another car and died. After, Miles and the Colonel went to Alaska's room to clean it out. They found a book with the question "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth" and in the margin Alaska wrote "straight and fast" similar to how she died. This made Miles and the Colonel want to figure out if it was an accident or a suicide. They talked to witnesses and her boyfriend, but it didn't help them. Then, the Colonel decided that his friends and him should do a prank in memory of Alaska. The prank was successful. One day, they remember that Alaska's mother died on January 9th and Alaska died on January 10th. They realized that Alaska started to scream because when she was doodling the white flowers she realized that she forgot to see her mother at the cemetary and leave flowers at the grave. Mile's teacher for his religion class stated that the final paper question would be about how to get out of the labyrinth of suffering. In his paper, Miles wrote about forgiveness and hoped that he would never forget Alaska.

"The only way to get out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive" (John Green).
