Lois Lowery was a middle child. She had an older sister and a younger brother. This was exactly where she wanted to be. She was an intavert and was happiest when she was alone in her room with a book and her vivid imagaination. She married at 19 to Donald Grey Lowry and they had 4 children. Alix and Kristin, Grey and Benjamin. Donald was a military man and they moved often. They settled in Portland, Maine.As Lois' children grew, she completed her degree in English literature form the University of Southern Maine. She wrote for Redbook Magazine and a Houghton Mifflin editor recognized her talend and suggested she write a children's book. Lois wrote A Summer to Die when she was 40. Writing about funny things and serious issues has gotten Lois through her own hard times. Her son Grey was killed in the crash of his fighter plane in 1995. It was Lois' most difficult day but she has persevered. This was during the Persian Gulf War. Lois remains active today by continuing to write and make speaking appearances.

Lois Lowry won the Newbery Award for 2 different books. This award is given to an author who makes a significant and lasting contribution to children's literature. The two books she received this award for are:Number the Stars (1990)The Giver (1994)
