Literary Approaches

7 Common Approaches

Literary criticism is a way to approach discussing pieces of fictional writing. The informal criticism of friends talking about literature tends to be casual, unorganized, and subjective. Since Aristotle, however, philosophers, scholars, and writers have tried to create more precise and disciplined ways of discussing literature. Literary critics have borrowed concepts from other disciplines, like linguistics, psychology, and anthropology, to analyze imaginative literature more perceptively.

This approach's analysis is based on the idea that art and literature evoke deep and universal responses in readers, no matter what age or culture they are from. Human beings use mythology as a way of representing themselves and their experiences symbolically. The mythological critic considers literature to reveal human desires, fears and expectations, and will use a text as a lens through which to interpret how particular cultures, or human beings in general, view themselves and their place in the world.A myth is a traditional story, esp. one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. One familiar and classic mythology is that of the Greeks.
