Literacy Autobiography

MultiliteraciesOne of the biggest motivators for me to learn how to read was so that I could understand what was going on during my favorite Japanese tv shows. Now I spend a lot of time on the internet. I use Facebook, but not Twitter. I browse Tumblr, but not Reddit. I'm on Pinterest way too much. Not sure what that says about me. I blog occasionally. I also am an avid user of Yelp! While I don't often post reviews, I have a particular way of evaluating reviews for legitimacy....

Literacy Autobiography

Languages that I speakI grew up speaking Pidgin English. But it was a language that I was taught to be ashamed of. We were told that it was broken or lazy and that it made us sound stupid. But now, as an adult, I am so proud of the unique and beautiful language with its rich history. I also learned Japanese as a way to reconnect with my ethnic origin. I loved learning a totally different system with the characters and different alphabet system. It isn't the language of my heart because I speak a school version of it. When I tried to pass it down to my children, they told me, "Mommy speak with your own voice." Whoa.

Love of readingAs long as I could remember, I have always loved reading. I love libraries, I love card catalogs, I love browsing shelves. My parents rarely let us buy books because the library was such a good resource and they didn't want us to spend so much money. But now, as an adult, I think I overindulge. Our house is full of books. And I overborrow at the library as well. As a kid, I loved scary books, fantasy and science fiction. My friends used to make me read the latest Stephen King books and then retell them at slumber parties. Not a good idea. As an adult, I became exposed to books from diverse perspectives and those touch my heart the most. But I still love a good dystopian novel. Thank goodness more and more women and people of color are also writing sci fi and fantasy. That way my loves are merging.
