The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of 7 debates held in Illinois between the two Illinois Senate candidates

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates

The debates were primarily about the issue of slavery and whether or not it should be allowed in the new territories

Even though Lincoln lost the Senate seat, the race (and debates) made him a known figure and set him up for his eventual presidency.
