Lincoln Alexander

Lincoln Alexander was born on January 21, 1922, in Toronto, Ontario. He grew up with his mom, Mae Rose who was a maid, and his dad, Lincoln Alexander Sr., who was a railroad porter. His mom came from Jamacia and his dad came from St. Vincent. He moved to Hamilton when he was a teenager. Lincoln died on October 19, 2012, in Hamilton, Ontario.

Lincoln Alexander was a lawyer before he was in parliament. He was the first black member of parliament and was the first black cabinet minister and lieutenant governer. He made life for all black people better. Lincoln Alexander really had an impact in the lives of many black Canadians. January 21st is now know as Lincoln Alexander Day.

Lincoln Alexander's childhood wasn't always easy. He was judged at school for being black and he couldn't be seen taking the bus. He was bullied many other times because he was black. Also, people didn't think he could be in parliament until he proved everyone wrong by being the first black MP.

In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Then in 1945, after the second world war, he decided to turn to a higher eduction. He first attended McMaster University and earned a BA in 1949. Then he attended Osgoode Hall Law School in 1953. After he died, the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, or the 'Linc' was named after him.

Lincoln didn't give up at any time in his life. He always achieved what he wanted to do. Lincoln was a determined, heroic, confident, and an indepentent person. He also didn't take things too seriously and always liked to make people laugh. What we can learn from him is to always trust ourselves.
