SynopsisWhen 16 year old Hattie Brooks gets a letter from her Uncle Chester that he has left her a claim on his homestead. Hattie doesn't skip a beat and moves to Montana. What Hattie doesnt know is that it takes a lot more than courage, strength and hard work to raise a homestead. Also with barely any money. Can Hattie Brooks do it or will she fail and lose her claim completely?

THE FOUR ELEMENTS1) The main characters in this book are Hattie Brooks, an independant, 16 year old homesteader. Uncle Holt, a supportive and understanding uncle.Perilee Mueller, loving and kind neighbor. Karl Mueller, nice and helpful neighbor, married to Perilee. Chase Johnson,Perilee's son,smart and helpful. Mattie Johnson, Perilee's daughter, sweet and talkative. Leafie Purvis, Hattie's other neighbor, a doctor,very demanding and loud. Rooster Jim,also Hattie's neighbor, nice but smells bad. Traft Martin, thinks he runs the town, cruel to citizens.2) The conflict in the story is when Hattie moves into her homestead and she needs to fix up the homestead ,take care of herself and her animals when she has no money.3)The theme of the story is coming of age and learning to take responsibilities and work hard. 4) The irony in the story is when Hattie Brooks is all excited about her homestead when she comes to find it a wreck.
