[2015] leah lund: Life of Pi

Pi- his full name being Piscine Molitor Patel. He gave himself the name Pi because he was trying to get away from the bullies that told him he was "pissing" everywhere. He is an Indian boy and is extremely religious. He believes in 3 religions: Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. “I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.” (21)Richard Parker- a Bengal tiger whose name was messed up on the transfer paper and was traded for his owner's name, being changed from Thirsty. Toward the begining of the story Pi says, “Dare I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I still see him in my dreams. They are nightmares mostly, but nightmares tinged with love. Such is the strangeness of the human heart” (3) He is kept in captivity in the Pondicherry Zoo

I loved this story, and I love the way that Yann Martel writes. He pulls you in and keeps you reading. This story, as it says, will make you believe in God. I give this story a 4-1/2 stars out of 5. I thought it was great and strongly recommend it.

The theme that seems to push through the most in this story is the importance of religion. I think it is the same as today. In order to "survive" or to live life to it's full purpose you should have something to believe in and hold on to when you need it.

Life Of Pi

This story is based on current time in India, but moves to the middle of the pacific ocean. This story teaches very important lessons, for instance, “You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it” (91)
