Cell Anatomy Compared to a Library

The Cytoskeleton of a cell is mostly in charge of the cells shape. If compared to a library, the cytoskeleton would be the walls which give the building its shape and structure.

Similar to a cell membrane, the doors of a library let people in and out of the building as the cell membrane transports proteins in and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm located within a cell is everywhere and everything, excluding the organelles. Within a library, cytoplasm is also everything, except for the other important functions of the building. It’s there, but has not much of a responsibility as a librarian (nucleus).

The head librarian is in charge of everything and anything that occurs within the library. With these characteristics, its safe to compare a head librarian to a nucleus within a cell. A Nucleus inside of a cell is in charge of everything that goes on within it’s cell, as a librarian is in charge of a library.

The ribosomes are the little tiny helpers within the cell. They help and transfer information to and from organelles within the cell. If looking for such characteristics within a library, you will find them much similar to a worker. Workers in a library put books away, help locate books, and so on an so forth; much like a ribosome within a cell.

The endoplasmic reticulum (E.R.) inside the cell is similar to a checkout line in a library. Both are the last stop before you can leave either location. Protein travels through the E.R. as it is being “checked out” and prepared to leave the cell. A check-out line is the last stop for a book to be able to leave the building.

Mitochondria produce energy for the cell to use. Within plant cells its chloroplast in Mitochondria’s place that convert sunlight into energy for the cell to use. In a library, mitochondria would be the energy generator for the building which gives it energy to use.

Similar to the golgi bodies within a cell, the book drop off at a library takes books in and brings it back into the cycle. Golgi bodies within a cell take in new proteins and get the proteins set up for the cycle within the cell.

Lysosomes are the trash cans, piling up with everything no one needs or has use for; even in a cell. Lysosomes remove old organelles that no longer serve purpose and remove the cell’s waste. In a library the trash cans provide the same use as a lysosome in a cell, removing waste that is no longer needed.


Water fountains found in a library are there to produce drinking water for the customers and workers within the building. A water fountain is similar in this sense to a vacuole within a cell. A vacuole stores water, energy (mostly water) for the cell to use when needed.

Chromosomes, there are so many of them within the cell, which makes it obvious why I am comparing it to books. Chromosomes are everywhere within a cell, just as books are located everywhere within a library.
