Where it starts

Leukemia starts in white bloods cells, which help you fight off infections. Leukemia makes bone marrow produce odd white blood cells that can't do their job right. As a result, when you get a simple common cold you could be sick for much longer and have worse effects.

The Different Types

There are four main types of leukemia:-Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)-Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)-Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)A rare type of CLL, called hairy cell leukemia, is caused by an increased number of lymphocytes growing very slowly. It is called "hairy cell" because it looks like it has hairs under a microscope.

How the TypesDiffer and Family links

How the types differ is that "chronic" types(CML, CLL), the leukemia cells do not mature all the way, so they aren't as capable at defe-nding themselves. The "acute" types, however,(AML, ALL) reproduce right away without any immune functions being developed. This has no known link in heredity, but some genetic disorders can cause leukemia over time.

These are the most common symptoms of leukemia. The picture shows loss of breath, enlargement of the liver and/or spleen, easy bruising and bleeding, swelling of the lymph nodes, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc.

The only difference in gender is that men are more likely to develop CML, CLL and AML than women. Age is a factor, because the older you get, the more likely you are to get CML, CLL, and AML, but not including ALL.Anyone can get it, no matter what skin color you have.

Treatment/How it affects their families

There are several ways to treat leukemia. You could do chemotherapy drugs, get a bone marrow transplant, or have very little radiation to kill the cells by little groups at a time.If a famliy member is diagnosed with leukemia, then it puts a lot of stress on their friends and family. The families are always in stress when they will get better, or pass away. They also have to pay medical bills to the hospital, which can be very expensive.

This is a ribbon for leukemia. It has been used for walks, marathons, charities, fundraisers, and much more.

When someone you know gets leukemia or any other cancer, these are what you should do when talking about it to them.-Offer your support to them.-Be a good listener.-Watch for them giving clues as to which they want to talk to you about thier cancer.-Do the same thing with them as you always had been doing.-When they give silence after talking, respect it.-Eye contact and warm, happy looks are also good.

What you can when interacting with them

This shows the difference between blood in a person without leukemia, and a person'd blood with leukemia. The left side has more red blood cells than white, but the right has more white blood cells that can't function properly.
