Let America Be America

Let America be AmericaBy: Langston Huges

Huges keeps on repeating how much he wishes America could be what it used to be. He talks about himself and says that he is the farmer and he is the young man. He says he is the one who dreamed about basic needs. He says ''let America be America again, the land of the free,'' But was America ever really free?

I really enjoyed this poem. At some points I would get confused because the language was vivid or really discriptive and I wouldnt understand it. I thought it was interesting how Huges repeated lines but every line had a different meaning.

I loved the lines when he expressed how people think America is beautiful and how it is great. But it made me sad when he would also say it is turning into something bad because I beleive that is true.

''O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas, in search of what meant to be my home"

Lula Georgiadis

Huges would say "It was never America to me," that would confuse me because he says he has a image of what America could be. So he's saying America never felt like America? He didnt know what it was before because it was a different time period.

My favorite line in the poem is "Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed- Let it be that great strong land of love,'' Because it shows that there is so many people who wish for peace and love and there is people who are still dreaming of a better place.

If I was a English teacher I dont think I would introduce this poem to my students because it was really hard to understand most of the time. It also didnt speak to me at all and make me feel something.

''Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be."

''All, all the stretch of these great green states- And make America again!"
