He was the son of ser Piero Da Vinci and Caterina da Vinci. Leonardo's parents were not married yet when he was born. Leonardo's grandfather, Antonio da Vinci was Ser Piero da Vinci's father. Leonardo had also 10 step brothers and 2 step sisters, coming from different mothers because Ser Piero da Vinci had married 4 ladies.
Leonardo da Vinci lived in the city of Milano for 20 years. There he worked for the prince of Milano to construct a fortress for him, with all kinds of defenses, from cannons to pits filled with water. The fortress is called the Sforza Castle from the name of the family who ruled Milano for centuries.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th at 11 pm, in Vinci, a small village near Florence in Italy. That's why his name is Leonardo da Vinci (Leonardo from Vinci). When he was fourteen, he was sent to the work shop of a professional teacher called Verrocchio.
One of Leonardo's greatest achievements was the Monna Lisa or in Italian, La Gioconda, a painting of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. He loved so much the painting that he brought it with him wherever he went. The Monna Lisa was stolen on August 21 1911, by an employee of the Louvre museum because he believed that Leonardo's painting should be in Italy. It was retrieved 2 years later, in 1913.
Andrea del Verrocchio was Leonardo's teacher. Andrea was one of the greatest painters of the time, and he teached Leonardo proffesional tecniques to paint that he would use in the future.

Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. He is considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and the most diversely talented person who ever lived.
