[2015] Matthew D-H (Outen - 5th block): Leonardo da Vinci

The Renaissance Man

The Last SupperLeonardo da Vinci painted the Last Supper from 1495-1497. It was painted on a wall in the ocnvent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The paint that he used had mostly peeled off within 50 years of it's painting but has been restored.

Leonardo da VinciLeonardo da VInci was born on April 15, 1452. He was born in Vinci, Italy to Ser Piero and a woman who was probably his slave or servant. At age 15, Leonardo moved to Florence, Italy to be apprenticed to the painter and sculpter Andrea del Verochio. Once Leonardo went to Milan in 1482 to become the Duke's court artist. He returned to Florence in 1500. Leonardo died in Amboise, France on May 2, 1519.

Mona Lisain 1506, Leonardo painted a portait of Lisa Gerhardini called Mona Lisa, Mona meaning lady. Leonardo had mucisions and enterainers to keep Lisa happy during the painting so she would not get the bored and sad expression of most portaits of the time. Whe the Mona Lisa was stolen form the Louvre, more people came to see the empty spot on the wall than had come to see the painting.

NotebooksLeonardo kept notebooks with his engineering designs and scientific discoveries. He wrote in mirror image to stop people from stealing his ideas. His ideas included flying machines and even armored tanks.

The Equestrian StatueLeonardo went to Milan to become a military engineer. Instead, he became the court artist and was comissioned to sculpt a calvary soldier. He wanted to make it 23 feet tall but later down sized it. The 75 tons of copper he was given to complete the project was taken to make cannons and other weapons that Leonardo did not design.
