Leipzig

Leipzig's Zoological Garden is one of the oldest in the world. In 1877-78, it began its existence as the private zoo of Ernst Pinkert, who rented the property on Pfaffendorfer Street. Since 1920, the Zoo has been owned by the City of Leipzig. At the time of its founding, the Zoo comprised only 2 hectares (4.9 acres), but today comprises 23.2 hectares (53 acres). The Zoo is located in close proximity to the city centre and at the edge of the large lowland forest belt upon which Leipzig was built.

Leipzig has been a trade city since at least the time of the Holy Roman Empire. The city sits at the intersection of the Via Regia and Via Imperii, two important Medieval trade routes. Leipzig was once one of the major European centers of learning and culture in fields such as music and publishing.[5] Leipzig became a major urban center within the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) after World War II, but its cultural and economic importance declined despite East Germany being the richest economy in the Soviet BlocMore recently, the city is sometimes nicknamed "Boomtown of eastern Germany", "Hypezig" or "The new Berlin" for being celebrated by the media as a hip urban center for the vital lifestyle and creative scene with many startups.
