Leif Ericson

Eric the red.Lief's father, was the the person who built the first European settelment in Greenland. Later on Eriksson sailed to Norway, where King Olaf I converted him to Christianity. One thought is that Eriksson sailed off course on his way back to Greenland and landed on the North American continent, where he explored a place with many grapes. He called this place Vineland because of all the grape vines. He may also have sought out Vinland based on stories of an earlier voyage by an Icelandic trader, who got lost in the Atlantic, and saw a wonderfull new land. After spending the winter in Vinland, Leif sailed back to Greenland, and never went back to North American. He is generally believed to be the first European to reach the North American continent.

The explorer Leif Ericson was a Viking, who sailed to Norway during King Olaf’s time. Some historians think Ericson sailed off course on his way back to Greenland and landed in North America. He called this land Vinland, because of all the grape vines he found. Others think he might have set out to find Vinland because of stories of an earlier voyage by an Icelandic trader. He is considered the first European to go to North America.
