Why do leaves change colors?

In the fall, as temperatures get colder, we notice that leaves change colors. The spectrum ranges from orange to purple. Why does this happen?Leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorb light and give the tree nutrients vital for survival. When the days get shorter and colder, the production of chlorophyll stops. This causes the green pigment to subside and transform the leaves in many vibrant colors before they turn brown and die.

“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”

Nathaniel Hawthorne
