Different ways to Count

Parents, teaching our children to count is an important step in getting them ready for school. Counting will be your child's first experience with numbers! As they learn to count, eventually, they will relate words to a quantity or amount of things!

There are several ways we can help our children learn to count so that they will be ready for school! In this newsletter, we will explore together how we can best help our students.

Let's watch!!

One-to-one CorrespondenceUsing one-to-one correspondence, your student will be able to match a number to an object accurately.

Skip CountingCounting numbers in groups. Your student will be learning to count by 2's, 5's, and 10's!

Choral CountingCount out loud together! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 5, 4, 3, 2 , 1!

How you can help at Home!1. Give them lots of practice at home.2. Count the buttons on the shirt as you button up.3. Count the steps to the mailbox.4. Count the eggs as you are making breakfast.5. Ask him/her to start counting from a number other than one.6. Toss each other a ball and count how many time the ball is caught without it falling.7. Play dominoes, Chutes and Ladder.8. Ask what number comes next.9. Help student to remember phone number and have them press the correct buttons on the phone.

Counting On/BackwardsAs you are counting, have your student give the correct number name. (Ex: 1 -one) Start at any number (Ex: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.) Help them count backwards from a particular point, (Ex: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5...)This will help with learning addition and subtraction in the future!
