Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Lawrence Ferlinghetti

He was born March 24, 1919 in Bronxville, New York.

His mother was committed to an asylum shortly after he was born, and his father died 6 months after he was born.

He was raised by his French aunt, Emily.

He attended the University of North Carolina where he earned a B.A in journalism in 1941.

That summer he lived with 2 college friends on an island. This experience gave him a love of the sea, a theme which runs through much of his poetry.

He married Selden Kirby-Smith in 1951, and they settled down in San Francisco where he taught French, painted, and wrote poems. He still lives there today, and he has won several awards for his artwork and poems.

"The light of San Franciscois a sea lightan island lightAnd the light of fog blanketing the hillsdrifting in at nightthrough the Golden Gate to lie on the city at dawn"

"The world is a beautiful place to be born intoif you don't mind happinessnot always beingso very much fun"

"There's a deathless hushon the freeway tonightas a Pacific tidal wave a mile high sweeps in"
