In L.A. there are more pyramids then the rest of the world.

City-states built pyramids for military defence.

Earliest known pyramid stands at La Venta in Tasco, Mexico

Mesoamerican people built Pyramids from around 1000B.C. up until the time of the spanish conquest in the early 16th century.

Best known L.A. pyramids include:-the Pyramid of the sun-the Pyramid of the moon inTeotihuacan. -the Castillo in Chichen Itza, Yucatan. -the Great Pyramid in Tenochtitlan. -the Pyramid at Cholula and the Incas great temple at Cuzco in Peru. -temple of the Feathered Serpent.

Pyramid in Cholula

-There shape comes from the shadow of the mountains surrounding the valley. -Beneath the pyramids are earlier structures like tombs of Teotihuacan rulers.-pyramid of the sun was completed in 200A.D-pyramid of the moon was completed 50 years later.

Temple pyramids formed the center of public life and were the site of much holy ritual including human sacrifice.

- It's a huge temple-pyramid located in Cholula-In 1359, the kingdom of Huexotzing took over Cholula. So by the time the Spanish conquered Cholula, the Great Pyramid had been ruin for so long that they thought it was a natural hill.

- The structure of the pyramid embodies a Mayan myth. - El Castillo is famous for an equinox that happens twice a year during the spring and fall. so this is what happens; as the sun sets, it's light creates a shadow which looks like a snake , which is reflected onto the stairway of the pyramid.

-It's the 3rd largest pyramid at Teotihuacan. -It was discovered in the 1980's There were more then 100 victims found buried beneath the structure.-It takes it's name from representations of the Mesoamerican 'Feathered surpent'
