Kyphosis

Kyphosis can be caused by many factors- degenerative spine diseases such as arthritis- fractures caused by osteoporosis- injuries or traumas- spodylolisthesis or the slipping of the vertebre

Kyphosis is a condition where the spine curves and causes a rounding of the back that leads to a person having a "hunchback" or slouched posture.

Etiology

Description

With kyphosis many things could happen depending on family history or specific traumas. Over time a persons back will begin to slump forward and create a "C" shape that could wear down the spine, cause inflammation, and at times cause paralysis.

Pathophysiology

Ways to diagniose kyphosis include-X-rays - Radionuclide bone scan- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)Computed tomography scan (CAT or CT scan)- Blood tests.

Signs and Symptoms- painful in the affected area of the spine- problems due to the compression of the nerves of the spinal cord -difficulty breathing as well as heart problems- abnormal curving of the spine

Pathophysiology

Kyphosis cannot be cured but various treatments can be used to help manage it- lifetime of physical therapy- backbrace- surgery- pain medications

Treatments

Depending on the type of Kyphosis a person has will determin if it is preventable. For exaple if the person was born with it then there is no prevention. Postural kyphosis can be prevented by standing up straight!
