KWASHIORKOR
A form of malnutrition that occurs when there is not enough protein in the diet
- Diarrhea- Fatigue- Increased and more severe infections (damaged immune system)- Irritability- Legarthy or apathy- Rashes- Shock- Swelling
What is it?
- Gives a bloated appearance because of water accumulation (oedema)- A bloated belly protrudes - Oedema begins in the lower legs and feet- Reduced fat muscle tissue but it is masked by oedema- Hair becomes yellow/reddish and becomes sparse- Skin lesions and hypo-pigmentation happen
What does it do to your body?
Food Choices- Dairy Products - Beans- Eggs - Red Meat- Poultry - Nuts- FishAny food source high in protein

- Common in very poor countries- Happens to children of both genders between the ages of 6 months and 4 years old- Youngest case: 9 weeks- Oldest case: 5 years old- Occurs in first-world countries as a sign of child abuse or severe neglect
