Ancient History
King Tutankhamun, sometimes called "King Tut" for short, was a Pharoah in Ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom. His name is also spelled ending in -amen and -amon, but was actually originally named Tutankhaten, and meant "Living Image of Aten," since his father, Akhenaten worshipped only Aten as a god. King Tut changed his name once he took the throne to Tutankhamun, which means "Living Image of Amun," and began worshipping all of the gods again, which made him more popular than his father, even during his short reign.
Why is Tutankhamun so famous? His reign lasted only roughly 10 years, starting when he was 8-9 years old, and ending with this death at 19.What makes Tutankhamun so famous is not what he accomplished in his reign as Pharoah, but in his death. His tomb, discovered by Howard Carter on November 4,1922, was one of the greatest find of the 19th Century. His tomb was the first truly intact found with all of his riches, and was also the last tomb found with that degree of riches.
