[2017] Sophia Phelps: Katie Ledecky project

Kathleen (Katie) Genevieve Ledecky

Early Life    Katie was born March 17th, 1997 in Bethesda, Maryland. She started swimming when she was 6 years old. She has only 1 sibling, a brother, and his name is Michael Ledecky. Her brother inspired her to be a swimmer, because he was one (and so was her mother; she inspired her too) and also the one and only Michael Phelps. She went to Little Flower Catholic School for 8th grade (located in Philadelphia). Later on she attended at Stone Ridge School of Sacred Heart in Maryland. She got a chance to meet and get an autograph from Michael Phelps! She got 2 world records, she won 4 world championships, and 1 Olympic gold all before her driver's license! Her 1st time in the Olympics was at the age of 15 in 2012, in London at the United States Olympic trials (and she was the youngest)! On her high school swim team, she held every single event (or record) possible, except the 100 - yard breaststroke!! She was also the youngest swimmer in Team USA. She was awarded as the "Fina Swimmer of the Year" in 2013. She was also titled as "International Champion of Champions" in 2014. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, she been known/titled as "World Swimmer of the Year" and "American Swimmer of the Year."

PersonalKatie Ledecky's heritage is Jewish. Her faith is being a Catholic. She was first coached by Yuri Suguiyama, but later on switched to Coach Bruce Gemmell (still is her coach now). She is always setting the hardest goals (AND I MEAN THE HARDEST GOALS) for herself, but in the end she goes and breaks them; when she is done making a goal, she goes and makes another one. She has broken at least 12 records and counting. She is an American Women's Freestyle Swimmer. When she's training, she usually likes to eat... pasta, peanut butter on toast, bagels, chicken, steak, and much more! (hopefully not all at the same time). She usually does 8-9 sessions a week. She even has more gold medals than Michael Jordan!!She broke Janet Evans 800 free record by just 2 seconds! (still amazing). Every time before every single dive into the pool, she claps three times (for good luck) ; one time she forgot to once but still won the race! She has a so-called lucky charm; it is a pullbuoy, and she named it Bellce. Her 'nickname' is the "First Lady of Freestyle."

Present/Or Was Present Katie Ledecky is 20 years old. She has 6 Olympic medals, 5 gold and 1 silver. She was featured in on a Jeopardy question. She has been in only 2 Olympic Games; the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She roughly trains for around 30 hours a week. She's in the gym and in the pool for her training (more so the pool than the gym). She got enrolled to Stanford University, but was supposed to in 2015. She chose to take a year off and focus of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Stanford is located in California (where she goes now). She was featured in Time Magazine ("100 Most Influential People"). SHe still trains will her original club called the National Capital Swim Club.

One of Katie Ledecky's Quotes: "I just like to swim... fast. I don't think about the distance."

This is a video of Katie Ledecky swimming in the Olympics (in 2012 and 2016) and from other races.
