his life
bad for rome
his love life was complicated. julius caesar himself was quilty of many extramartial affair-with cleopatra, among others. he had a son with cleopatra.one of the relationship that he had was with servila caepions the half sister of cato the younger because it was thought possible that brutus was his son.
caesar nominated himself as the new high priest of jupiter. when the roman ruler sulla declared himself dictador, he began a systematic purge of his enemies and particulary of those who held to the popular ideology.he was stripped of his position as priest adn his wife's dowry was confiscated. left without means of supporting himsejf or his family, caesar joined the army.
julus caesar was great leader of rome, but also responsible for the architecure of a few roman buildings he built the forum julium with the basilica julia, renovated of the rostra, and rebuilt the curia
caesar entered into business/political agreement with pompey and crassus dubbed the first triumvirate. the three men together the effectively ruled rome, caesar as cunsul, by pushing through measures favored by pompey and crussus in the senate.caesar proposed legislation for reform of government, opposing optimate sentiment, and a redistribution of land to the poor, both long-held populare goals.
it took effect in 45BC shortly after the roman conguest of egypt it was the predominant calendar in the roman world. the julian calendar has a regular year of 365 days divided into 12 months a leapday is added to february every four years the julian year is, therefore , on average 365, 25 days long it was intended to approx. the tropical (solar) year.
good for rome
rather than returning rome as ordered, caesar crossed the rubricon river with his legions and marched on the city. this was considered act of war as the rubicon was the border between the province of gaul and rome. pompey rather than meet caesar in battle, he fled to spain and then to greece where he was defeat by caesar's smaller force. pompey escaped and went to egypt, but caesar's great victory reached egypt before him, the egyptians believing that the gods favored caesar over pompey, had pompey cilled as he stepped on shore.
recognizing the wealth to be gained through conguet, caesar went to gaul. he defeated the tribes there just as he has done in spain and secure the borders of the provinces. when the germanic tribes seemed threatening to invade, caesar built a bridge over the rhine river, marched his legions across in a show of force, then marched them back and had the bridge dismantled. the germans understood the message and never invaded.
in spain and gaul, caesar betrayed the interests fo roman allies by sacking their towns and enslaving roman friends. his campaing in gaul finally led to the threat of prosecution for his illegal crossing into german territory.
