Julius Caesar (by quintinbignell)

Julis Caesar was born July 13th 100 BC. He was born into a Patirician . Caesar joined the military in 79 BCE. During this year Caesar was sent on his first diplomatic mission. During this time he was rumoured to have an affair with Nicomedes of Bythnia. After this mission he was declorated for bravery, and caught by pirates who demanded 25 talents for his release. Once Caesar returned to Rome he was elected to the military tribune as quaestor for the year of 69 BC. This is Caesars first position for the government of Rome. Throughout that year Caesar deliverd the funeral oration for his aunt, his wife Julia had also passed away that year. In 63 BC Julius Caeser ran and was elected as Pontifex Maximus chief priest of the Roman state.

Early Career

Julius Caesar

During the year of 60 BC Caesar was elected as one of the two Consuls of Rome. Throughout this time he did many things such as, strengthining the realation ship with Pompey. He married a woman named Calpurina. The details of Caesars consulship are some what distorted. It is well known that he was corrupt, and once his year was over Caesar barely avoided prosecution for the crimes he had committed. He then proceeded to return to his home (norhern Italy). Caesar governed provinces, two of which were at the border or Gaul. It was known that parts of Gaul were unstable. One of Caesars four legions moved in on Gaul and began to conqoure the territory. Once most of Gaul was secured Caesar had a clear way of attacking Britain, while he was doing so his daughter Julia passed away during child birth. In 52 BC a Gallic revolt was staged against Caesar, they proved to be tough to fight but overall Caesar won. Hundreds ofpeople died during this war, and hundreds more were inslaved by the Romans. During the year of 50 Bc Caesar was orderd back to Rome by the senate, who was led by Pompey. Caesar knew if he were to return to Rome he would be charged with treason. The year of 49 BC is the time that changed Rome, Caesar and one of his legions crossed the Rubicon river. Upon doing so he sparked cival war. Many people of the senate fled Rome to southern Italy, including their leader Pompey. Caesar chased Pompey all the way to Egypt where he was then murderd. During this tim Julius Caesar fell in love with Cleopatra and appointed her as Pharoh of Egypt. In 48 BC Caesar was appointed dictator of Rome during this year many say he killed all of Pompeys supporters. In 46 BC Caesar was appointed dictator for 10 years. The populis of Rome did not resent Caesar at this time, they praised him for his victories, and his conquests of other territorys. Throughout his time as dictator Caesar passed many political reforms. He even changed the Calender for Rome to the Calender that the Egyptians used, to even out the seasons. Caesar created a police force, he had many goverment officials mandate and enforce his laws, especially his land reforms.

The real question is why does Julius Caesar matter? Was he a great man, or was he merely just another Roman citizen who thought he could rule the world. That is up to ones interpretation, but in my opinion Julius Caesar was a great man. He led many successful conquests, he even crossed the Rubicon river. That alone proved he knew what he wanted. It takes only a great man to dissolve one of the most powerful governments in the ancient world, and that is exactly what Julius Caesar had done. He made many political reforms for Rome and overall he was an event making man. He decided which territories he wanted, and he acquired almost all of them.
