In 1215, abuses by King John caused a revolt by nobles who forced him to sign the Magna Carta, recognition of rights for both noblemen and ordinary Englishmen. It established the rights that no one, including the king or a lawmaker, is above the law.

King John, a mean, over-powering man, who over abused his power as king, was forced to sign the Magna Carta or be forced out of the position of king.
