She was born in New York City during her parents' first and failed stay in the United States. When she was three months old, her parents, both native Dominicans, decided to return to their homeland, preferring the dictatorship of Trujillo to the U.S.A. of the early 50s. Once again, her father got involved in the underground and soon her family was in deep trouble. They left hurriedly in 1960, four months before the founders of that underground, the Mirabal sisters, were brutally murdered by the dictatorship. Julia is married to Bill Eichner since 1989, Julia Alvarez lives in Vermont. In recent years, she has served as a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College. She has written many novel in the past years of life and many books for children as well. One of her novels " In the Time of the Butterflies" is a novel based on a true story that happened in her home country.

- How The García Girls Lost Their Accents was chosen as 2008 selection by Cambridge Public Library for their Citywide Book Club in their annual Cambridge Reads program. -- - Awarded honorary degree, Doctor of Letters, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT. Delivered commencement address, "Toward Hope and History Rhyming," May 18, 2008. - In the Time of the Butterflies selected as the One Book-One Chicago choice for 2004 by the city of Chicago, a citywide book club sponsored by the mayor's office and the Chicago Public Library. The program culminates with author's visit, including readings and visits to schools and libraries as well as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, October 18-21, 2004.
The Novel In the Time of the Butterflies
The novel is based on her experience of what happened in Trujillo.
