Juan Ponce de Leon

Juan Ponce De Leon

AccomplishmentsJuan was known to be the founder of the oldest settlement in Puerto Rick and landed on the mainland of North America, Florida. He gave Florida its name because of it's lush floral vegetation and it was around Easter time when he found it. He later on became the first governor of Puerto Rico. He also became a soldier and fought against the Moors in Granada.

Juan was born in 1460 in Spain. He was born into a poor but noble family. He served as a page at the court of Argon. He married a young beautiful lady that went by the name of Leonara. The two of them had three children together. Juan was a very hard-working and determined man. One fact that I found surprising was that he was less than five feet tall.

Early Life

LegacyJuan Ponce De Leon began his quest as part of Columbus's second expediditon in the year of 1493. He built settlements in Hispaniola in the very early 1500's and started farms and constructed defenses. In the year of 1514 he was named the military governor of Bimini and Florida. Then he later on left for his second exploration in 1521 for Florida again. However he later died in that year.

Fountain Of YouthPeople say that he found Florida while he was searching for the Fountain of Youth. Juan will always be associated with the Fontain of Youth even though there is no record that he searched for it.

Fun FactJuan Ponce de Leon died in Cuba, but his remains were later transferred to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they were put to rest in San Juan Cathedral. Puerto Rico's third-largest city, Ponce, comes from Juan Ponce De Leon.
