Juan Ponce De Leon

Juan Ponce de Leon was born in 1474 in a wealthy spanish family. He worked as a page for a knight for most of his youth. After he was taught the Code of Honor, the way he would be expected to work as a knight, he became a squire. As a squire, Ponce de Leon was taught how to hunt and use weapons such as swords and spanish guns that kind of looked like rifles. He finally put his skills to the test when he fought in the battle against the Moors in Granada from 1487 to 1492. Because he fought so well in the battle, he was allowed to join Christopher Columbus' second journey to the "New World." There, he helped build a settlement called Higuey. Ponce de Leon went to Florida two times. On his first journey, He and his navigator discovered the Gulf Stream. He went to Florida two times because he tried to colonize the land on his second voyage. In 1521, Ponce de Leon died at the age of 47. He was taken to a settlement after a Calusa Indian's poisoned arrow hit him. His wound became infected and he died a few weeks after he was hit.
