J.R.R. TolkienJanuary 3rd, 1892throughSeptember 2nd, 1973By: Avani Mitra

J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontien, South Africa, on January 3rd, 1892. He was named John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, which later got shortened to J.R.R Tolkien. His parents' names were Arthur and Mabel Tokien.

On February 15th, 1896, John's father died, so his mother, his younger brother Hilary and himself moved England, West Midlands. There, J.R.R Tolkien was sent to King Edward's School.

On November 14th, 1904, Mabel Tolkien, his mother died of diabetes. A priest at a local church, Father Francis, took John and his younger brother in, before sending them to a boardng house.

At the boarding house, John met a young woman named Edith Bratt. When he was 16, and she was 19, they struck a friendship that gradually deepend. Finally, Father Francis had to intervene and forbade John from seeing and corresponding with Edith until he was 21, 3 years later.

Fun Fact! When J.R.R Tolkien was young and lived in Africa, he encountered a large, hairy spider, and although the memory was hazy, it influenced his writing later on.

After being banned from seeing Edith Bratt, J.R.R Tolkien went to Exeter College, Oxford in 1911 where he stayed there immersing himself in the Classics, Old English, and the German languages Welsh and Finnish until 1913, when he picked up his relationship with Edith.

On March 22nd, 1916, John and Edith married in Warwick. Later on, John was drafted for the war and was sent to the trenches. After 4 months of in and out of the trenches, John got trench fever, a typhus-like infection common in the insanitary conditions. In early November, he was sent back to England, where he spent the next month in a hospital in Birmingham.

Edith and J.R.R Tolkien's first son, John Francis Ruele Tolkien was born on November 16th, 1917. Their second child, Micheal Hilary Ruele Tolkien was born in October 1920, and their third child, Christopher Ruele Tolkien was born in 1924. Pricilla Tolien was born sometime in 1929.

In 1937, J.R.R Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, which was very successful. Publishers asked him to make more books that had material like that of in the Hobbit. So J.R.R Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy from 1954 and 1955.

On Novemeber 22nd, 1971, John's wife Edith died. Two years later, John died on September 2nd, 1973. J.R.R Tolkien and Edith Tolkien were buried in a single grave in the Catholic section of Wolvercote cemetery in Oxford.

Fun Fact! On May 11th, 1926, J.R.R Tolkien and C.W Lewis (author of the Narnia Chronicles) met and soon became friends. This was thier first meeting ever.

Fun Fact!Did you know that although the Lord of the Rings trilogy had been published in 1954 and 1955, J.R.R Tolkien had actually been working on them since the late 1930's.
