Joseph Stalin

After Vladimir Lenin died, Stalin managed to become the new ruler of Russia. During his reign, he brought Russia out of poverty and industrialized the country. In the late 1930's, he fought a battle against his own people in an event known as the Great Purge, where Stalin either killed off or enslaved millions of Russian citizens who he felt weren't loyal to him. During WWII, he signed a nonaggression pact with Germany, but later sided with the Allied powers after Hitler broke that pact. His reign of terror continued after the war, where millions more Russian citizens were killed. In 1950, one of Stalin's last acts of war was allowing North Korea's leader, Kim Il Sung, to attack the American-controlled South Korea, leading to the Korean war. After his death, his body was preserved in Lenin's Mausoleum, but was buried after Krushchev took over.

He brought Russia out of poverty and made it an industrial world superpower. He helped defeat the Axis Powers in WWII.By increasing tensions with the West (U.S.), he greatly contributed to the start of the Cold War.
