Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin was 7, when he got smallpox and children made fun of him because he had a deformed face. Since that happened, he was on a quest for greatness and respect. His mother was Christian and she wanted him to become a priest. He did very well in school and got a scholarship to Tiflis Theological Seminary. Joseph gained infamy with association with the Tiflis Bank Robbery in 1907. This resulted in several deaths and 250,000 rubes stolen (3.4 million U.S. dollars). The Soviet government went through a violent period when people were trying to take control. In 1922, Stalin was appointed the General Secretary of the Communist Party which gave him control of all appointments, and made his power stronger so all the members in cental command owed their position to him. When everyone realized what he was doing, it was too late. Even Vladmir Lenin, the leader of the group who was ill, was helpless to regain control from Stalin. After Lenin died, Stalin set out to destroy the old party leadership and take control. Paranoia set Stalin in a reign of terror, having people arrested the night before show trials. Millions were killed in forced labor or starved. He made a pact with Adolf Hitler to make truce for no war against each other. He was convinced by Hitler's integrity, not listening to his military commanders that Germany was mobilizing armies on its Eastern Front. When the Nazi blitzkrieg (surprise attack) struck in June 1941, the Soviet Army suffered massive losses. That was when their "friendship" was over. Stalin dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japan, forcing them to surrender in 1945.Between 1945 and 1948, he established Communist regimes in many Eastern European countries, creating a vast "buffer zone" between Western Europe and "Mother Russia." Stalin suffered another defeat when he convinced Kim II Sung to invade South Korea, thinking the United States won't interfere. In 1948, Stalin ordered an economic blockade on the German city of Berlin, in hopes of gaining full control of the city. The Allies mounted a massive airlift, supplying the city and eventually forcing Stalin to back down. The purges of the 1930's depleted the Soviet Army and the government. Even that his successes in WWII was strong, Stalin's health began to deteriorate in the early 1950s. An assassination plot was uncovered, he ordered the head of the secret police to investigate the purge of the Communist Party. Stalin died on March 5, 1953. He left a legacy of death and terror as he turned a backward Russia into a world superpower.
