John Steinbeck

Born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902, John Steinbeck came from a moderate family of German and Irish descent. He worked his way up to Stanford University, but never graduated. He went to New York City to become a writer, but returned to california unseccessfully. Then he started doing manual labor to support himself, and wass caught in the grips of the great depression. After publishing a couple of stories (without much success) , he became widely known with Tortilla Flat. Since then, he has written many great books such as The Grapes of Wrath, and Of Mice and Men, and engaged in many stugles of he country (America), such as the Cold War.

1930's - Commonwealth Club of California Gold Medal for Tortilla Flat and In Dubious Battle. Later receives the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Of Mice and Men.1940's - Receives Pulitzer Prize Fiction Award for The Grapes of Wrath , and gained international praise. Later became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.1950's & 60's - Receives Nobel Prize for Literature. Then receives the title of Honorary Consultant in American Literature to the Library of Congress, and is given the United States Medal of Freedom
