John Philip Sousa

1854John Philip Sousa was born Novemeber 6, 1854 in Washington, D.C.

1854His father played trombone in the U.S. Marine band.

1860John began musical study around the age of 6.

1867 His father enlisted him in the marines at the age of 13.

1875 Discharged from the marines, he began performing on the violin, touring and eventually conducting theater orchestras.

1930 He wrote Stars and Stripes Forever,the official march of the United States of Marine Band.

1879 He married Jane van Middlesworth Bellis at the age of 26.

1880 He was discharged from the marines and returned to Washington D.C. and assumed leadership of the U.S. Marine Band.

1932 John dies in March at the age of 77.

1895 Sousa's first successful operetta, El Capitan, debuts.
