JOHN OXLEY

John Oxley 1783-1828

John Oxley was a surveyor for the royal navy in his early life. Then also before he became an explorer he was a surveyor-general of NSW.

John Oxley was born in 1783? near Westow, Yorkshire England. He has explored many rivers and lakes. Oxley had followed the Lachlan river 100 kilometres then past Rankin Springs, but unfortunately they had to stop because of the horrible swamps and lagoons.

As reward of new found land John Oxley received, a large patch of land then he became a sheep grazier.

Lachlan Macquarie told Oxley to go with George Evans to expand his explorations.

John Oxley then again went back through the Lachlan River but on a different route. He found land, it was quickly filled up by farmers and sheep graziers but he also got his fair share.
