John James Audubon

John James Audubon was born in Haiti in 1785. Audubon grew up in Nantes, Fance. At age 18 he moved to America to escape being enlisted into Emperor Napolean's army. Audubon spent much of his life exploring nature. He endured many hardships while living in America. His greatest work is Birds of America in which he collected 435 life-size prints of birds.

Writings from John James Audubon's JournalOn the 17th of May, the Delos put out to sea. I was immediately affected with sea-sickness, which, however, lasted but a short time. I remained on deck constantly, forcing myself to exercise. On landing at New York I caught the yellow fever. The kind man who commanded the ship that brought me from France took charge of me and placed me under the care of two Quaker ladies. To their skillful and untiring care I may safely say I owe my life.

Besides painting birds, Audubon also liked to paint mammals. His favorite media to use for his paintings were watercolors. Audubon also made several contributions to science. He studied the anatomy of birds and was one of the first people to tie bands around the legs of birds to track the migration patterns. In 1826 he sailed to England and sold some of his art.
