1917

John F. Kennedy was born, He was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Early in his presidency, JFK authorised a failed invasion of Cuba. This led to Krushchev, the leader of Soviet Union, to ship nuclear missiles to Cuba and aimed at the US. JFK imposed a naval quarantine on Cuba and was readying for another invasion. The Soviets removed the missiles and a third world war was averted.To get a step ahead of the Soviets, On May 25, 1961, JFK announced the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. Project Apollo, a reality by 1969 and NASA’s spaceflight efforts were guided by Kennedy's speech. His goal was achieved on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.Post the standoff, there were intense discussions between US, Britain and Soviet Union on a need to limit nuclear missiles. On Aug 5, 1963, the representatives of the three countries signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which prohibited testing of nuclear weapons. The treaty was the most vital step towards preventing use of nuclear weapons. Subsequently a comprehensive test ban treaty was signed at the UN.

John F. Kennedy's Senate career got off to a rocky start when he refused to condemn Senator Joseph McCarthy, a personal friend of the Kennedy family whom the Senate voted to disaprove of in 1954 for his search for suspected communists. In the end, though he planned to vote against McCarthy, Kennedy missed the vote when he was hospitalized after back surgery.

On November 22, 1963, Kennedy and his wife landed in Dallas. From the airport, the traveled in a motorcade to the Dallas Trade Mart, the place where Jack would speak next. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., as the motorcade was passing through downtown Dallas, shots rang out; Kennedy was struck twice, in the neck and head, and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital.

Despite persistent health problems throughout his childhood and teenage years (he was later diagnosed with a rare endocrine disorder called Addison’s disease), John (more commononly known as Jack) led a privileged youth, attending private schools such as Canterbury and Choate and spending summers in Hyannis Port on Cape Cod.

Joined the U.S. navy, his brother Joe Jr. died in a plane crash. His other brother, Joe Sr., told him "Take Joe Jr.'s place and become the first Catholic president."

1954

Throughout his pre-presidential career, JFK was an active Cold Warrior. As noted, his first Congressional campaign boasted of taking on the anti-Cold War faction of the Democratic party led by Henry Wallace, and as a congressman he aligned himself with those who said the Truman Administration wasn't being tough enough, when he willingly attached his name to the chorus demanding "Who Lost China?"
