John Dalton

Atomic Model

A New System Of Chemical Philosophy

Since he was young, Dalton was very gifted. His intelligence allowed him develop his Atomic Theory, which is still used today. Although some might not hold entirely true today, his theory is still good over 200 years after.

"The total pressure exerted by the mixture of non-reactive gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each individual gas"Dalton created this law when he discovered the amount of water vapor that could be absorbed by air at different temperatures. This mostly applies to the water displacement method.

Dalton published his work about atoms in 1808. A New System of Chemical Philosophy had information Dalton collected over the many years he studied and expiremented. He stated that atoms of different elements can be distinguished from one another by their varying atomic masses and weights.

Law of Partial Pressures

Dalton's Atomic TheoryElements are made of atoms too small to see.All atoms of a particular element are are identical. All atoms of different elements have different properties. In a chemical reaction, atoms link to one another or seperate from one another.Atoms combine in simple whole number ratios to form compounds.Atoms cannot be created, destroyed, or split.

John Dalton 1766 - 1844Meteorologist, Educator, Scholar, Chemist, Scientist, Journalist

At 19, he was the principal of a school.Dalton never married or had kidsIn 1822 he turned down elected membership to the Royal Society.
