John Cabot

- John Cabot was born in Venice, Italy around 1450- In 1476 he officially became a Venetian citizen and began conducting trade in the eastern Mediterranean. - In the late 1490's he moved to England and gained a commission from King Henry VII to make an expedition across the northern Atlantic.- He married Mathye and had three sons: Lewis, Sebastian, and Sancio in 1496.- Cabot set sail across the Atlantic ocean in 1497.- In May 1498 Cabot set off from Bristol with about five ships and 200 men.- By July 1498 it was believed that his ships had been caught in a severe storm.- By 1499 John Cabot was assumed to have perished at sea.

Impact on the World and Discoveries- Cabot failed his attempt to find a direct route to Asia, but because of his description of the plentiful fish in the waters around Newfoundland he attracted European fisherman and made a long lasting impact on the worldwide fishing industry.- He was the second European to find North America (after Christopher Columbus).- He discovered the mainland of North America; probably the Labrador coast
