Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms was born on May 7th, 1833 and was born in Hamburg Germany. He lived in the time of the romantic musical era. Brahms became involved in music at age 7 when he started to play the piano. Besides the piano Johannes played the cello and horn.Brahms loved to read, once he learned to read he couldn’t stop. He studies math, history, English, French, and Latin in private elementary and secondary schools. Johannes attended the University of Music and Performing Arts is Vienna. It was founded in 1817.

Brahms was a German composer and pianist who wrote symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, choral compositions, and piano sonata. In 1863 he was named director of Singadekime (a choral group). While he was there he concentrated on historical and modern a cappella works. By the early 1870’s he was principal conductor of the Society of Friends of Music. Johannes also directed the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for 3 seasons. After the death of his mother in 1868 he finally finished a German Requiem. The listening piece I chose of Johannes Brahms was Hungarian Dance No. 5. Brahms wrote it because when he was just a young pianist he accompanied a Hungarian violinist and there he fell in love with Hungarian music. I thought the theme sounded sort of happy or proud. The instruments for this piece are double bass, bassoon, clarinet, horn, violoncello, oboe, flute, percussions, trombone, trumpet, viola, and violin. It is about 4 minutes long. There were 21 different Hungarian Dances Brahms composed. Link to Hungarian Dance No. 5During Brahms’ lifetime lots of significant world events happened. The U.S.A. declared war on Mexico in 1846. In 1849 the California gold rush began. The Crimean War began in 1853. The Civil war began in 1861. Lastly, in 1879 Thomas Edison invented the first practical electric lightbulb. Johannes never married and he loved nature. He loved to go on long walks in the woods. Johannes travels all over Germany in his lifetime. He went to Weimar, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Vienna, Hamm, and much more. The websites I used to find this information include Biography.com, ClassicalMusic.about.com, MusicAcademyOnline.com, NotableBiographies.com, and Musiced.about.com.
