Jeanne d'Arc

Jeanne d'Arc was born in in 1412 in Domremy-la-Pucelle in France in a poor peasant family. She could neither read nor write. Later on she taught herself to write her name to undersign the letters.

Twenty years later, the Pope Calixtius III found her innocent and declared her a martyr. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920.

She was captured by the Burgundians, sold to the English for 10.000 francs, sentenced to death for wearing men's clothes and being crazy and mad and burned at the stake when she was only 19 years old.

When she was only 12, she first claimed to have visions from God. In these visions, she said, God told her to take back her homeland from the English rule. She got the support of the future king, Charles VII and...

Her body was burned twice until it turned into ashes. They were later thrown into the Seine so that nobody could say she ran away.

... during the Hundred Years' War between France and England she led the French army to several important victories, among which the siege of Orleans in 9 days only, was the most important.

She is still an important character in many books, films, games, songs and dances.
